We offer good quality antiquarian books on South Africa and the rest of the continent, published from two-hundred years ago until the present, on a number of subjects, as listed on the right hand side. Just click on any of these for a selection to browse. All of the stock is listed here, so searching is easy, either with the Quick Search form at the left, or if you require it, click on the link to our Detailed Search Form just above. We make extensive use of KEYWORDS - so try them if you are not sure what you are looking for, or you can Browse Subjects, as here on the right hand side. We issue catalogues of our latest acquisitions every four months for local and overseas clients which you can receive per E-mail, if desired. Just mail us your request and we’ll gladly put you on our mailing lists. Speciality lists of titles dealing with your favourite subject will be E-mailed to you speedily.
Our books are priced in US Dollars, which are converted to Rands for local clients at the ruling rate of exchange on the day of sale.
Thumbnail images of all books priced at $50 and more are supplied. We keep a WANTS database, and welcome any request and will do our best to find uncommon items of Africana. If required, further photos illustrating condition of covers, dw's/dj's are available for most books and any further queries regarding condition, or within reason, content, will be answered with pleasure per E-mail. All correspondence will be answered as promptly as possible; subject to the vagraries of cyberspace. If you don’t get a reply, it means we didn’t get your message.
I started my love affair with the African continent, and the literature concerning it, Africana books, with emphasis on South Africa, some 60 years ago. Since then I have been an avid reader on all aspects of the continent's history, humanities and natural history – so I will gladly advise clients on the best choices to cater for their needs. If you are visiting our beautiful country and city, please do pop in to meet us and browse our books. Africana Books is located a few minutes from the city centre, on the slopes of Devil's Peak. Parking is normally not a problem. Just ring us to make sure we're in, and if necessary for directions on how to get here.
Africana Books has been a proud member of the TOMFOLIO co-operative bookmall for a number of years (www.tomfolio.com). We fully subscribe to their standards of excellence, integrity as well as individuality. Please be assured that your financial transactions will be treated with the best security available. Mastercard, Visa, Amex and Diners welcome; with the first three we also need the last three numbers appearing on the signature strip on the reverse side, the CVC number, for all transactions. Our SA clients may prefer to pay per EFT or direct deposit - just contact us for our bank details. Before we ship any overseas order, we will contact the client with a quotation for the different mailing options and their costs. All parcels, except those sent by Second-Class Airmail, are either registered or insured for a nominal amount, subject to our postal regulations, which unfortunately preclude insurance options for a number of countries.
While descriptions of condition are always subjective, we try to describe books as fairly and completely as possible. We guarantee delivery of books as described; any complaints or discrepancies must be reported within 72 hrs of receipt.
Newsletter: Africana Votes and Views
I review a number of books on African subjects, old and new, all the time. Some are old acquaintances, but re-read after years or decades, some are seen in the light of the passing seasons and current events and even some of my travels are desvribed. Others are new authors, or new titles by old friends.
E-mail your request to be included on the mailing list to firstname.lastname@example.org, you will receive these short newsletters periodically on what I gleaned; the subject matter, readability, accuracy as well as my views as to whether the books belong in everyman's collection, or whether they are for specialists only. Some contributions will be on practical aspects of book-collecting, maintenance and even DIY publishing. Occasionally I write articles for the Society of Bibliophiles in Cape Town, or a little historical broadsheet, the "Cape Odyssey" and other publications - on matters other than books about Africa, and these may be included. Alternatively, you can have a look through the whole archive at our blogspot: http://africanabooks.blogspot.com/.
